Mitralign is a start-up medical device company located in the Boston
area. We are currently developing an innovative, catheter-based mitral valve
repair system that not only provides an alternative to open heart surgery but
emulates the traditional surgical repair technique.
The condition treated, mitral valve regurgitation (MR), is common in
patients with Congestive Heart Failure. Clinical studies have proven that MR significantly
increases the risk of mortality in patients afflicted with CHF, a disease
affecting 25 Million worldwide. Studies hence recommend earlier treatment of MR
in these patients.
The principal pathology of mitral regurgitation in CHF patients is dilatation of the mitral valve opening. The novel Mitralign system resembles surgical repair as it directly reduces the size of the mitral valve opening. The Mitralign procedure utilizes catheters introduced entirely percutaneously to deliver a series of implants along the perimeter of the valve. The implants are cinched together, reducing the circumference of the dilated opening hence diminishing the mitral regurgitation.
Of note, lots of people have mild to moderate MR, but they are currently only considered for surgical repair or replacement when the condition becomes symptomatic and not well treated with medications, or if there are signs that the heart failure is causing damage to other organ systems, such as the kidneys. The Company endeavors to provide an earlier, less invasive option to health care providers.
